How to get more steering lock?

Alright guys,
From watching back the in-car footage from my last drift day I kepy an eye on the steering lock and noticed pretty much EVERY time its sitting on 1, 3/4 turns round the ends of the oval, I suspect i'm subconciously doing that so that i've got 1/4 of a turn left to correct it if I get anymore angle. Quite a few times i've found i'm on full lock for ages and then spinning out, be nice to just have a little bit more

Don't suppose anyone knows what could be done to increase the lock? Or what the limiting factor is currently?

cheers

Ali

Not a lot mate, even with the current setup it'll rub if the tracking's not set correctly.

Given your car is just for drift, not daily driving, i doubt you'd care too much about a bit of rub, or modify inner and outer guards to suit, We did a while back on a bush basher of ours redrill the holes where the ball joints for steering arms connect to the hub, closer to the hub itself, so that the same amount of steering arm movent resulted in the wheels turning further, dunno if you could do the same to the 360, and how much it would affect the weight of the steering though, and you won't get more or less lock, same lock (unless wheels completely fouls something) just more wheel angle.

Hmm damn, I really don't want to mess with the caster, etc either as its really good for drifting, ah well was just a thought, it still holds enough angle, just more would be nicer

:? Don't think it would mess with the caster at all.

I know that there are steering rack mods for AE86's that you can screw between the rack and the inner steering knuckle. Like a little cilindrical metal tube that sits flush with the steering rack, so it can be pulled in farther.
You just pop these on one end and readjust the whole steering assembly for the new situation. Also might be worth looking into possible differences on steering arms, often there is a difference in length between power assisted and manual steered cars (dunno if this holds true for the v300 though).

Had a look under my car yesterday, there's not really enough steel under there to do what i suggested... :?

Rust? whats that? I beleive it happens only in countries that get that strange natural phenomenon, rain.

My car car dosent have any rust :P but rain is a problem in england but here in france nothing seams to rust guess it saved the 340 that came from england. 8)

One thing worth doing is to make sure your rack is centered. Equal turns for one way to the other exactly. It would be possible to move teh position of the track rods to give you a little extra but that will involve cutting and welding.

Am i right in saying non-PAS racks have more lock?

My B-plate GLEI seems to have a much tighter turning circle than my F-G (i forgot already) PAS'd up last 360...

Ali hasnt got PAS either so it dont matter to him, but personally, i wondered.

Regarding more lock, what makes it hit full lock? Have they got lockstops like most cars? If so, first job is to cut them off...

full lock = inner balljoint hitting the steering rack. That's why you need to lengthen the rack a bit. That way the rack can be pulled in more to one side. How this will work out depends heavily on the amount of gearteeth that are cut into the rack. Some cars have some extra that arent used normally.
You dont need very much lenthening though..
Here's a link where you can find a few examples:

Can't get too much more lock as the other suspension components are in the way. Someone's car on here rubs the anti roll bar on full lock as the tracking is out and the rack is slightly off centre.

TBH although there's less turns lock to lock, I don't think there's any difference in turning circle between my PAS and non-PAS 360s. The 360 with the rubbing problem is a PAS car, suggesting no difference.
