A little while ago my friend bought this car...

http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... sc&start=0

From reading the thread it seemed pretty mint.

Went to look at it and it had a knackered rusty passenger wing and surface rust in various places, but it wasnt too bad, and the owner assured us it was mint barring what you can see.

Wrong! lol.

Ive just been over it with a fine tooth comb (and my finest MOT testing big rust jabbing screwdriver, lol) and its more rust than metal, frankly.

Both front wings on the rear halves are non existant, just a pile of rust and dust on the floor.
Inner drivers one has a hole you can put your fist through.

Under the passenger carpet i found newspapers, hmmm.
Then i found out why, a hole at the front about 2.5inches round that you can see the inner wing through, and to top it off 4 bits of metal that had been fibreglassed over more rust holes! (rust not even sorted, just bodged over).

Both sills look like theyve been firbreglassed almost their whole length so i wasnt expecting good news, but they seem solid, suprisingly.

Rear arches were made mostly from fibreglass and wire mesh, but not as bad as the rear sections of the front wings.

Chassis rail on front passenger side has been badly repaired from some previous rust and has now rusted through again.

Probably more but not found it yet.

Oh joy :(

(i wont mention the badly leaking transmission that pisses oil all over the rear bodywork...)

Oh dear :(

Sounds like that's only suitable for the crusher, but before you send it off, there are probably lots of parts that are worth saving, they'll be worth something to the right person because Mk2's are rare, so its probably worth pulling everything that's in reasonable condition off the car before you get rid.

Ouch that does sound like a basket case  Certainly looked alright from the pics

Definitely sounds like a breaker unless you're handy with a welder and like the car, should be able to recoup some costs by selling the pimp bits :)

Wouldn't worry about the diff, mine's doing that AGAIN :P Need to check the end plate bolts

christ that has come as a shock especially as he spent £200.00 on welding for the last mot ,
worth more than what he paid for it in parts though so he wont lose out ,

lecky windows , chrome top bumpers , tow bar , boot spoiler and front fogs should all sell

its a shame another 300 is going to the crusher

Shame, it looked quite tidy from the photos. If he wants a rather less rusty example to replace it with, mine's still available...

we messing with it now, cant decide wether to fix it, almost seems worthwhile, not cause its a rare one, but because at least we know whats buggered with it now.

i mean, if another one was bought it could be just as bad, as said appearances can be decieving.

i doubt a seller would appreciate me jabbing at suspect bits of car with a screwdriver, lol.

be intersted to know what was welded for last mot actually.

what do you want for your one nick?

I'm after £250 for mine. It's a good shell, and I'd rather keep it, but I can't afford to run it, and it seems a waste to leave it sitting around doing nothing when someone could get good use out of it.

Holy hand grenade @@@!!!.....i would never guess that from such nice photos, a car that only has wheels, seats and roof will turn up.
Such a shame.....another one goes to crusher or on junk yard .

If the rust shows signs in one place, it can't be far behind in others unless you catch it quickly! Such a shame, but it you're going for the full treatement on it, respect and fair play, lets see a mean mk2!

I'd say it's just about the epitome of 300 series grandad-ness....chrome-top bumpers, baloon tyres on 13s.....you can just see a huge caravan on the back sm56

cheers

I agree with James , all that was missing was the neatly folded plastic mac and trilby on the back seat lol
