exhaust rattling

Post by A M R »

my exhaust has been rattling for a bit now. i finally stuck it on some ramps and found out what was going on.

the exhaust bangs in the middle on the left side of the car at the bit where it comes close to the sill/start of where the leaf spring bolts on.

i looked at the middle box - it seems to have some hooks for rubbers, but cant see any on the chassis for them to hang off. maybe this is the problem?

This a 360 or 340...sorry can't remember. If its a 360, then those hangers aren't used for the exhaust.

The middle box is clamped to the torque tube, front and back. Probably one of those brackets is missing, particularly the ones bolted to the rear of the middle box as they use very flaky thin steel plate that seems to rust away in no time at all.

I find that the standard rear exhaust mount rubbers allow enough movement for the rubbing on the leaf spring. Both my MK2's did the same. The cure for mine has been replace the rear O shaped rubbers with big zip ties to minimize movement. This stops it all together but do need replacing over time as they wear, zip ties are cheap/easy to replace.

It seems to be more of an issue if the car has heavy loads over the rear wheels.

Having the rear box mis-aligned is a favourite one too.

yeh those rubbers on the backbox are looking a bit tired. i'll try stick some cable ties on and see if it happens. i also had a brainwave to stick some padding like cotton wool or something against the pipe to stop the rattling. any suggestions/comments?

I'm no expert, but I'd imagine that cotton wool would be fairly flammable, so I wouldn't go putting it next to your hot exhaust

I see all the answers you need in this thread.

If all the mounts are on (three rubbers on rear box, flexible thin steel hanger on the centre box to the torque tube, and the DP mounted to the TT at the front), it's the correct exhaust, and you've got it on straight, it shouldn't bang.

Having said that, I've heard that all the baddest drifterz use cotton wool...it's like +25bhp ;)

cheers

i used my 1337 bodging skills and now its fixed with a few bits of wire!

theres a couple of metal thingies at the back of the middle box and they have holes through them for bolts, and the torque tube has a 'u' clamp on it with holes for bolts as well. im guessing these sheared off as i found one insude the clamp.

i just put loads of wires through the holes to stop it moving up and down and side to side. its all good now 8)

did get some pics but my phone wont bloody connect to the computer! :x

good thing i did it half hour ago as its totally pissing it down right now.
