Door hinge pins
I know this is a job some have struggled with, others are planning...and which really shouldn't be that hard...
I tried to do Nessy's today, but got stuck on the first one (with the best access) with the pin only about 1/4 in, and rapid deforming as I hit it.
Apart from adjusting the height of the door using a jack, is there anything which will help get the old bent pin out of the hinge?
Any tips / tricks?
cheers
James

Which door pin hinge removal tool are you using? If it is the utter sh**e Draper was selling, then give up! It's cheap for a reason. If it's the genuine Volvo tool, which I remember from Mac's info is cranked like a 'Z' shape but at 90 degrees to each other, or a copy, then you'll do a lot better. As the other tools are straight, resulting in you supporting the handle end, and the shock when you hit it is transferred straight through your arm and not the hinge pin. I've managed to break one of the pin removal pieces too, as for the Volvo hinge pins, the small one is too small, and the medium one supplied in the kit is just too big or a very tight fit from memory. Anyway, being hardened, get it offline and it'll snap.
Soak them for as long as possible with the dust caps inplace at the bottom with a good pentrating oil. I've attempted it on three different doors now, one on a very very worn pin in the hope it would be easier, and the other two on un worn pins. None of them worked! I say the Draper tool sucks. As you say it shouldn't be all that hard. I think with the correct tool it'd make the job 200 times easier. I certainly won't be attempting it on a good car with the Draper effort. Thankfully it's only been on cars I've been breaking in the past. And in all cases, I've resorted to the good old angle grinder and a cutting disc and taking it off the door pillar complete with hinge and pin! At least then a suitable drift can be used with easier access afterwards!
As to the pin deforming, is the head of the insert big enough to spread over the top of the pin with the screw on nut end, as I found the smaller one wanted to open the pin up and wedge it's way down inside it.

I'm not using a tool Pete - I'm hammering the old one out with the new, which seems to be the recommended method!
Andy says his brother managed it, but he has the Volvo tool, and a lot of patience. Andy gave up, I think.
cheers

Hugh's did the job on Nessy didn't he? If so, the hammer old out with new can't have stood up to time very well

So the conclusions are...
1) Hammering out doesn't work. I can believe that...
2) The draper tool is pants
3) You need the Volvo tool.
Bummer...er....Mac?
cheers

I haven't tried that yet.
If I buy a Volvo tool....would people be interested in hiring it for a nominal fee? I shudder to think what it'll cost...
cheers

Would I be right in assuming that the hinges are welded to the pillars? cos it'd be so much easier if you could just unbolt them

I doubt it would James, I bought the proper 1.7 cam setting tool, and it cost £25. Even comes with a pimp tool holder and label for that
