Problems with my grandmothers 360 GLT 1982

Hello

i hope my english is good enough to explain it correctly ...

car is a 1982 360 GLT
original 31250 KM
my grandmother is the first owner ;)

yesterday i was driving around about 110km/h ...
suddenly the engine wasnt making power any more

i drove about 3km to the next town and looked at the engine ... it ran about 450umin without any shaking or missfireing ... the exhaust manifold was GLOWING
the exhaust sound wasnt so smooth like it should be but no blue or white smoke ...

i decided to wait 20 minutes and then drive home ... about 30km MAX 70km/h ...

i first thought, the fuel filter could be the reason because the tank was pretty empty and the car normally parks month without being moved ... it only has 31250km!

i replaced the fuel filter but nothing changed ...

i looked at the timing belt an what i saw made me really angry ...

the timing belt was replaced at 30.000km about 2 years ago ... or lets say, she paid that it should be replaced :?

it has many cracks on it ... looks exactly like the one i saw 2 years ago bevor it was "replaced" ...

i think, timing is now one teeth off ...

everything else ist fine ... all vacuum lines and hoses looking great ...

everything just like new, but a little bit dusty after 27 years ;)

i normally do all repairs on my cars and i would like to replace the timing belt myself

do you know where i can get a service manual with a discription what i have to do?

or do somebody have another idea why the car isnt running really great any more?!

hope you can help me ...

Welcome to V3M!

Have you checked the obvious, like the oil and water levels? Otherwise I'd check whether the thermostat is opening properly, and the condition of the radiator.

The Haynes' Manual for the Volvo 340 / 360 can be had really cheaply on Ebay UK. Otherwise there is a German-language manual from the "ZUG" publishing company, but I think it only covers the Mk1 343 and was never updated ...

The belt is not a bad job for a competant DIT mechanic to do. Fist thing to do is check the belt position first.

Glowing exhaust manifold and no power could be massively retarded ignition timing. That (in theory) can't happen on later 300s because of the Renix system, but an early 360 has a 'normal' distributor, with triggering inside the distributor.

I suspect the t-belt has skipped a tooth or two, throwing the ignition timing out.

thats exactly that what i think ...

i think the timing belt is the first one from 1982 ... it looks very old ... very possible that ist skipped a tooth ...

and the exhaust sounds like the engine ist burning direktly into it ... very hard blowing ... not so smooth like it was

hopefully i get the hayne manual next week so that i can start to repair the car ...

i will tell you ... maybe i will post some pictures ;)

btw, this ist the car :)

The most common issue I have seen over the years with the early silver top engines it the cam pully set to the wrong side of the mark. I've even had cars sent to me form Volvo dealers with this simple belt installation error. That only normaly causes lack of power and lumpy running. It would have to be a bit further out to glow the echaust manifold.
