Speedo cable query

Hello, I have been wondering about the speedo cable and how you are supposed to fit it through the hub of the front wheel. Is there a special tool or special trick etc?
When I replaced my speedo cable a few years ago, I read the Haynes manual and it just said to push end of the cable through the hole in the hub. However, it turned out to be a nightmare job since I couldn't get the cable through at all and so I had to trim off the plastic coating to get it to fit in and hold it in place with a cable tie. This was not really a satisfactory solution since I now have to keep greasing the end of the cable where it goes into the hub to keep the water out of the cable.
I keep meaning to do it better one day so any clues much appreciated.
