Is it possible to lighten the flywheel?

the title pretty much says it all, im after adding a bike of poke to my 1.7

If you do, make sure it goes somewhere with lots of experience. I have nightmares looking at some of the milled bodges on flywheels, and seen enough pictures of punctured transmission tunnels to scar me
Can't think of any that are lighter as stock either

These flywheels arent that heavy standard...Wouldnt see the reasen for it. Maybe a 16v flywheel is lighter, but I couldnt see any difference on the eye

There are also so called flat flywheels for these engines but those won't work with Renix so you'd need to use some other ignition. Flat flywheel weights about 9kg as the dished one weights about 13kg. Flat flywheels can be found from B19,B21, and B23 engines. B2x0-series has the dished flywheel. (And ones with the M90 gearbox have double mass flywheel)
It's not much difference in kg's but the differnece is noticeable. Engines with dished one have more sluggish feeling when the rpm's rise if compared to an engine with the flat flywheel.
Of course for those who want something really light and also safe, with few hundred euros you can also get something like this

Weight is not same as inertia and inertia is what one likes to remove when lightening flywheel.
Take 5kg weight swing it around arm straight, then try to stop motion, now do same by turning only your wrist, weight is same, inertia is different.
Reducing inertia is done best by removing material from edge of flywheel, with Renix flywheel that means indeed loosing renix holes and need for new ignition setup.

I think the original poster is talking about the 1.7 engine, rather than the Redblocks. I thought the 1.7 flywheel was probably the lightest of the range?

But question is can it be made lighter, well it should be is it possible to reduce inertia of flywheel and certainly it is possible, but it comes with cost naturally.

Put the flywheel from a clio 16v on there, F7P or F7R engine, same trigger pattern just lighter flywheel.

Just bolts on as a direct swap.No need for any machining etc. Only any point doing that combined with other mods tbh

only ever been in chris's 1.7 but I can't see that making it rev more freely will help you, it seemed to pull very well as it is. It certainly won't give you more "poke", only more response with the same poke. What you need to cure your poke problem is moar torquez
