Free 340 GL 1.4 (London)

Post by lightning_tom »

Hello All,

I have a 340 GL 1.4 (1985) that has sadly developed some engine knocking that I cannot fix.

Could be good for spares or as a cheap car for someone who knows how to fix these things (i'm not particularly savvy mechanically).

Car has MOT til May and Tax until June. Last recorded mileage before the speedo cable broke was 87000. I'd guess true mileage to be approximately 100,000.

Car is driveable but as I say, engine knocks and vibrates.

NB although car is on a C plate and was registered in 1985 it has the old style rear light clusters with the vertical strips so was probably registered late.

Cheers,

Tom.

Hi Redline,

The car is currently in Shepherd's Bush (W12) although it will probably move to Kew at the weekend as I'll have hopefully transferred my residents parking permit to a new car.

Cheers,

Oops, forgot to say car is dark blue (not quite navy).

the knocking.. does it only happen on full throttle, or all the time?

Hello 5lab,

I'd say it's the opposite - worse when the engine is idling but not so noticeable with a bit of throttle.

PS I'm not sure if 'knocking' is the right word, but from a layman's point of view it feels like there's a couple of rocks kicking round the bottom end!

Cheers,

does it happen with the choke out?

sounds like it could simply be the idle speed is set too low :P

yep I think it still happens with the choke out as I have had to start it with full choke recently on frosty mornings and I'm sure it was still doing it...

hello Tom It might be worth havin a look at the exhaust maniold gaskets mate, when one of these starts to blow it can sound very much like an engine knock specially when cold, Gaskets will cost you £13ish and if you can do it or know someone who can will only take about an hour. might be worth a look mate! good luck

There's a little rust on the sills of the rear doors (she's a 4-door btw), other than that pretty good I think.

4 door saloon? rare! (much rarer than the 3 door and 5 door hatchbacks).

fraid i'm not interested - after my latest ruin, i'm waiting till i can get a mint on. try putting it on www.volvoclub.org.uk 's forums - someone will have it.

the old-style lights mean its a mk2, which is a LOT rarer than the mk3s (newer rear lights, indicators in bumpers) that everyone has :)

Thanks Husky,

I've already bought a new car, but thanks for the offer. Perhaps someone else could put the two together...

Just a reminder to one and all, this car is FREE!!

Cheers,

Tom.
