I have decided to take the rubber side strips off my 340 and I have removed the actual top rubber but there is a adhesive layer under that is there a chemical which will remove this but will not remove the paint work?

Softest stuff I know is a bottle of stuff called "sticky stuff remover". Smells a bit like cake if it was made from chemicals. Chemical cake if you like. It's good but expect to be there a while but for that it won't damage your paint. I also find those ice scrapers for windows are good for getting the initial black adhesive off.

solvents should be fine but deo has loads of crap in it which could have some paint dissolving properties. I'm not sure what they put in those things.

Best thing to use is your thumb - rub until clean, expect large blisters - seriously

Sticky stuff remover is Brilliant took me over 2 hours to remove the adhesive of the rear panel and then with with sticy stuff remover it took me less than 2 hours to do the rest of the car. i'd recomend it.
