couple of q's from a new owner

hey guys,
just a couple of q's on things to do with the 340 i'm picking up tomorrow. havent really looked around it that much apart from for a drive to see what its like, and looking around the body work.
its a 1.7 gl manual g reg
1, is this engine carb or electronic ignition (ecu) i'm only 21, so most of my car knowledge is electronic, never even taken a carb off an engine except for a minimoto. lol
2, what can be done on the driveway to get a bit more power out of it? i know some na's benefit alot from adjusting the timing, any one done this on these?
3, springs, where can i get uprated and lowered from ones from, i have read the ones from other cars fit, but what ones? also, if i can find some 2nd hand leaf springs, i have heard that you can just cut the ends off, attach them underneath the standard ones on the car, and it stiffens them up abit? this true? if so how do i go about attaching them? also, where can i get lowered blocks from?
4, seats, only complaint i had about driving the car was the driving position, how easy is to drop a set of cheap bucket seats in it, using the standard subframes?
cheers for any help guys

hello,
1.7 will be carb as mentioned. definatley worth cleaning it out and making sure there are no air leaks etc. and get used to using choke for cold starts.
seats will require modification to make fit, so it you can cut and weld and drill a few holes then you wont have any problems.
can't tell you much about timing, although a set of webbers or bike carbs or similar and a free flowing exhaust would surley see you a few more ponies. engine swaps are very popular for those looking for a bit more poke, renault F7p from a clio/19 16v being the easy one for a 1.7 (b172 is a renault engine). plenty of info around on that.
springs can be purchased from classic swede on here, along with poly bushes, dampers, lowering blocks and the like. have a look through his catalog in the for sale section. I've heard of people doubling up rear springs, although i have no experience so can't comment on the effects. mk 1/2 escort lowering blocks and some straight bolts are what you want for the rear.
have fun with your volvo!

It is highly unlikely you can change the power by just changing a setting on the Engine (except turbos), everything should be optimal already unless it is faulty. Ignition timing is set by the ECU (coil module) and cam timing is fixed by the cam shaft.
More power comes from getting more molecules of air and fuel into the engine cylinders, fuel is easy and just needs the correct mixture, the hard part come from getting more air in. You can do high lift cam shafts, bigger valves, gas flowing, bigger exhaust. The easy stuff like big straight through exahusts or better air filters only make a few BHP difference, but the noise is good. If you really want power you need more cc's, 16 valves or a turbo (or all 3). My favourite engine is the 700/900 series 2.3 Turbo, but you'll need a 360 to start with for that.
If you do change the more difficult stuff then you may well need to change cam or ignition timing to match or fine tune.

The 16 valve swap is fairly straight forward. The 100% easy no hassle swap is the 2ltr from a 400 series with the extra advantage that it looks exactly the same as the 1.7
Do a search on the foum and you will find pretty much all the info you need to do either of teh above swaps.
Tuning the stock is posible. Simple mods would be exhaust and cam then moving onto custom manifolds and carbs. For more again you could increase valve size combined with some basic porting work on the head.

exactly the same? Like if some naughty person fancied an engine change but wanted the car documents to remain as 1721CC, would it be impossible to spot the difference without actually pulling the engine apart?

Very much so. If you know the engines extreamly well you can tell by the shapeof teh block by the starter. You would be able to take it to the volvo dealers and I doubt they would even notice unless they went for a test drive.
Oh and teh engine tag does it give it away if it still has one

You probably want to type in something like 440 b20 (b20 is the engine)-nothing to do with the b200 in a 360 (the one in the 440 is a 2.0 renault engine-whilst the 2litre in the 360 is a volvo redblock)hmmm good luck-should be something amongst all the pages...

If you want a fairly easy 10bhp, then the carb, cam and renix from a carbed 440 will get you there. The drillings for the carb are in the public domain, the cam is in a fair few different 480's, but I can't remember about the renix off the top of my head.
Look up specs for the 440 B18KP, it's a B172 in all respects apart from the above, and made 95bhp standard.
