Looking for a NOS or used working <1982 temperature sender, two terminal type for this type of gauge:
The wiring is fine, I can only guess that either the sender is duff or the sender isn't earthing properly.

Do you know the specs for them guys? VDO do them by spec, so thread size, temp range and temp for the switch cut in. If it already has a part number even easier
EDIT:
This is the linky I wanted
http://tinymicros.com/mediawiki/images/ ... mation.pdf
P22 (17 of 86) <- that'll make sense when you see the page numbering of that pdf

I'm going to look at mine again when I'm near it in just over a week. It's only done 15k, maybe it's corrosion and not earthing fully. Wiring is fine. I'm surprised that a switch would fail with so little use (probably what killed it

)
There's got to be a big stash of these somewhere.
I don't know the spec, but will get part numbers off the one in vehicle when I'm in Glasgow.
I do know the Volvo number though

Just posted the above linky, but finding a VDO from a Volvo number is normally possible. Post up when you find the no, and you'll be able to get a new rather than NOS one

I'm told it's 3285410. For a 1.4 Vario.

Can't find anything quick from that, I'll check the green books though when I get a chance though.

Bear in mind, those are Smiths' gauges. Don't know if that necessarily makes a difference for the sender though ...

Yeah, hadn't thought of that

If one of you has a working one, then we can check it's a 0-180ohm type same as the VDO's though.
We'll find something that works as it should anyway

Right, in Glasgow and had a look at the sender (after tightening up some
very slack tranmission drive belts

)
Smiths Industries 18/2 is stamped on one face of the hex.
TTS 1103/00 on another face.
Conical seat to it and I think M14 x something or other thread.
Found
THIS so I'll get on the phone to Cai gauges in Wales in the morning.

That's good news, let us know how you get on. Except for that South African site I wasn't able to find any source for that sender either with the Volvo number or the Smiths no ... From '84 onwards there are QH senders available, but that won't help you.
Fingers crossed ...
