Hi my dad has bought a 1987 340gl 1.7. It starts fine but once the engine has got up to temprature it revs really high and will stay there, then when we come up to a junction and stop the engine just stops but start again easily enough. Would be greatful for any tips as to how to sort it.

i could be a buggered carb gasket my 1.7 gl did the same
new carb gaskets and a lot of messing about with the mixture and it was sorted
it may also just need tuned if no improvement check the gaskets
if any are torn or look excessivley worn chances are that will be the problem
seems to be quite a common problem with them

Had a similar problem with my 340 1.4, but that even happend with a cold engine.

Starting and reving into the red zone and not coming down again.
Had a fiddle with it,until i got sick of it (took apart the carb 3 times by that time) smacked all the carb parts in a box an towded it to the garage.
50euro's later, all fixed, fine-tuned...

Problem was a faulty fuel mixing tube.

I don't know if the carb on a 1.7 has a mixing tube or something, but its definately a carb problem!
