had a bit of a play in the snow the other night, and i have an open diff, was going well then i heard a vibrating noise,

stopped, drove it home, and left it. left for work this morning, and pulling away spinning on ice i heard the same noise, and again tonite,

are 340 diffs known to fail if spun alot on an open diff? i havent had a chance to have a look yet, but assume its the diff as it only happens when only one wheel spins, not when driving normally

any diff will eventually fail if one wheel is turning at recordspeed and the other wheel is standing still.

drain the oil, and check it that says enough about the diff.

Yeah diffs can break when one wheel is spinning. It's still working so you've probably just damaged it a little. Should relatively easy to find a new one. I know for a fact that there's a number in the A1 scrapyard near Stevenage. If it was me I'd check there were no cracks or leaks, top up the oil, then put up with the noise and drive it until the ice thaws. Basically - it's going to be no good in a few 1000 miles so run it into the ground. Then put the new diff in. Sorted

I broke my first 300 quite badly, 1980 1.4. wheel spinning in wet with attitude. The little axle that joins the small gears had broken but it still drove with the occasional lurch round corners. The 82 on diffs are stonger.
