I just found this thread:
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... 67#p106018

But I can't post in it...

What I want to know, is there anyone who has experience with this relay: OPEL 1238550 ?
Does it work exact the same as the VW one?

Because the opel one is way cheaper

No experience mate. If you do get stuck, give me a shout, that VW relay is hugely common over here and I'm sure it wouldnt cost much to post you one.

Chris, some extra info from a V3C member that works at a volkswagen dealer; relais was also installed in following models:

-caddy 1983-1992
-corrado 1989-1995
-golf 1992-1998
-golf cabrio 1984-2002
-golf varian/synchro 1986-1998
-golf variant 1994-1999
-jetta synchro 1988-1992
-passat/santana 1988-2000
-passat/synchro 1990-1999
-polo/derby 1991-2000
-sharan 1996-2000
-transporter 1991-2004
-transporter synchro 1996-2004
-vento 1992-1998

VW parts no 3B0 955 531 (has been altered over the years; this is current VW number) don't bother visiting the vw dealer for a new one, in holland they are 47 euro's a piece including tax.
might be usefull as extra info for in the how to section :D

Good spot.
Scrapper is surely a billion times cheaper though?

When the weather gets warmer I'll pop to my local scrapyard and pull as many of these relays as I can err... pocket

To be honest, if I show the scrappy owner what they are he'll probably just give them away anyway  (One of the rare good scrapyards!)

Same here, my yard has let me take 5 so far as he knows I'm in fortnightly for the most random things anyway

What about the poor VW guys, you should leave some for them, you know their money has gone to all faulty bits in their cars, bits that 300 does not even has

Sounds indeed interesting, have to find such relay just for store if I ever happen to need one (I'm not too sure about driving in rain with 360, it may get wet or dirty).

Cheers

That's the cheapest I have seen (From VW). I was thinking of this one:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 3DWatching

And then make a groupbuy of 10 (I have a german adress for shipping).
But I don't know if this one works as good as the VW one...

Ah yes, but is the Opel relay programmable? I can only guarantee that the VW "99" (357955531) and "197" (3B0955531) relays work as intended. Oh and the corresponding Bosch 0 986 335 058. The rest of the list probably comes from some dodgy cross reference. I've seen some eBay items where the list is long, "fits in place of ...." including these two programmable VW types but also including the non-programmable 191 955 531 and 321955531A! So buyer beware, indeed.

There's even a Taiwanese clone
