Hi!

The tailgate on my GLT is a bit rusty around the holes where the spoiler is fitted - and one day I'd like to replace it. The thing is, the colour of the car is quite rare (light green metallic 302) and so far I haven't seen any panels for sale in that colour. Buying a whole car for parts isn't really an option - it's a pity to scrap good cars with good panels (these cars are expensive too) and rough cars tend to have rough panels



I'm going to look at a new tailgate tomorrow - unpainted and without window or trim. Is that a realistic option? How easy is it to swap the (bonded) rear window of a MkIII over? It's probably a bit of a job swapping brittle 20-year-old trim over too ...

Or should I look for a complete tailgate in a different colour, and have it resprayed? I can't really imagine the end result being as good as if a tailgate was painted from scratch, without window and trim ...

Any thoughts?

getting the glass off is quite easy; stick a needle through the glue at the sides with a few meters of fishing wire attached around it and then slice all round through the glue, usually that's when the really nasty work begins; getting all the glue off the rear windscreen

placing the glass again; is quite easy too, use the correct glue, clean the surfaces; put the screen in and leave it to dry. the trim; if you're not sure about a technique to remove them; find yourself a nasty boot and try a few methods, destroying the trimming of a scrap car doesn't matter

Thanks for your advice Anjo! I've now got that tailgate in my cellar - and will attempt the change-over. It'll be a while till I get around to it though ...
