MOT prices in UK (and other countries) ?

Post by jtbo »

We have been told that you have most expensive MOT in EU area, average price is around 120 euros. I know that in UK garages do the MOT testing too, here currently only special MOT stations are allowed to do MOT tests, however there is movement towards to system in UK.

But what will happen to prices, I have to pay now 78 euros for MOT test.

Is 120 euros realistic sum? How much do you pay from MOT+emission test (if that is separate cost)?

Our MOT is due yearly and I believe same goes for UK too, however France had MOT only every other year according to propaganda our newspapers spreaded, which may or may not be truthful.

I paid 93 Euros for the MOT (Hauptuntersuchung) and the emissions test (Abgasuntersuchung) last year. Last year MOT and exhaust emissions were still checked and billed seperately, as from this year the emissions test will be part of the MOT test which makes sense I guess. Pricewise they will of course raise the MOT cost to the previous MOT + exhaust emissions cost.

MOT here is every other year, new cars only have to go after the third (not second) year, although there's talk of raising that to four years. There's also talk of raising the testing rate for older cars to yearly, as "old cars need more regular checking" but of course that's just a scheme to make a bit more money ;-)

Here the MOT (TÜV) prices are fixed, in the UK they can be quite cheap AFAIK as garages can go under the recommended rate if they like ...

Our propaganda says, in Germany price is 44 euros and testing every 2nd year, I think our propaganda is not correct in this. It seems to be pretty big money harvesting system indeed, some countries don't require MOT and what I did read, they don't have much higher % of accidents because of mechanical faults, that make me questioning whole system to some extent, however I think that for current population skills regarding to technical gadgets, it is perhaps better than majority is being babysitted in this matter

2nd thing our propaganda newspaper claimed was that our system is made lot easier than yours, we need to visit only at MOT office that files all registration status updates and such (which would be reason for needed high prices according to propaganda), I really don't think that you have to run around the town in several offices like propaganda gives impression to, so how is your process, drive to testing place, pay and that is it or do you need to run around town with papers?

BTW, propaganda newspapers I'm referring to are one of largest paper in country and largest financial publication in country, if they supply false information it tells something about state of information war going on in this country.

in holland a normal MOT is around €40, that includes emissions test.

some tyrecentres do them for €25/30 but usually you get fail on products they sell, tires, shocks and exhaust for example even if theres hardly anything wrong with it..

base cost for a uk MOT is arround £55.

garages can charge less if they want but no more, but the less you pay the more problems you can garantee.

I pay £50 cause i get discount. which is good. im happy at £50

test is once a year and checks safety only emmissions included along with brake testing.

€50 here for bi-annual test from 4th birthday of the car. From June 2011, cars over 10 years old will be tested annually. Car can be taken in up to 6 months prior to it's first test at 4 years, otherwise it can be taken up to 3 months in advance. Certificates run in line with the car's first (worldwide) registration date and not on when the vehicle was tested (except from recently where first "in state" registration date in state is used). Includes emissions (although two-stoke and Wankel engines are exempt). 30 days allowed for retest and only items (or linked) that failed are retested. If it's minor, like a brake light bulb, it's free. If it's minor, like a headlamp out of alignment which requires it to go back on a lane to use the test equipment €28 (guess why I was f**ked off with the car only failing on n/s headlight alignment sm2 )

Testing was only introduced 10 years ago here (EU directive forced their hand). Before that, folk used to drive around in some complete sheds. Testing is done independently of garages by NCTS currently on contract to Applus+ for the next ten years (Previous holder SGS). Still no testing of 3-wheelers and motorcycles though...

UK MOT fees HERE. Maximum fee is £54.00. Authorised testing places can charge whatever they like up to the maximum. Private cars tested from 3 years old. Certificate runs from 12 months from date of test, unless done within 28 days prior to expiry of old one and old one presented, then it can run for up to 13 months. Testing done by VOSA approved garages.

Its £30.50 in northern ireland £18.50 re-test, you can only get one from a government M.O.T. centre (was always like this because it was seen that privately owned garage's would be open to corruption), although an english M.O.T. is valid in N. Ireland and vice versa.

On Rathlin Island off the North Antrim coast is exempt from M.O.T. testing, and is only 11 miles from the mull of kintyre in scotland.

So if one happens to live at Rathlin island, how about if he likes to drive on mainland, he would not need MOT that way, right? 3rd rock from the cliff should be good address

Looks like article that I did read was full of disinformation, it is now very clear that those newspapapers were just trying to get our system to look better in comprision by lying prices in other countries, that is evil, imo.

Same testable items yet 43% cheaper for a class IV test. Other fees here

Vehicles do not need an MOT if they are only used on GB islands that have no road connection to the mainland. This exemption does not apply to vehicles used on the Isle of Wight, the islands of Arran, Bute, Great Cumbrae, Islay, Lewis, Mainland (Orkney), Mainland (Shetland), Mull, North Uist and Skye.

Wrong, if he likes to drive on the mainland, he gets the car tested ;)

The same testing exemption exists here in the Republic: "Cars permanently based on islands that are not connected to the mainland by road do not have to be tested.", I would guess these is an clause in the EU directive for remote islands.

The other exemption I forgot to mention was that cars with a first (worldwide) registration date prior to 01/01/1980 are exempt from testing here (IRL). sm4 (It used to be anything over thirty years old, but they've locked the date down on it.
