Fuel usage at tickover? 85' 1.4.

Post by CBA »

What's the fuel flow (approx) for a 1.4 340, 1985, manual choke at tick-over with fully warmed up temp?
---I'm using the blower to keep warm but think this is a mighty inefficient way to keep warm...
Am I better getting an aux heater+battery for keeping the car warm when "In the car for extended periods late at night when it's cold"? - need about 10 hours of heat+light tops -

After coming back from a POS modern FWD tossbucket, I feel a lot safer and confident with a 300 brakes than i ever did in that bucket.

There is a lot of talk these days about electric vehicles, and heaters are a sore point. Batteries are a poor store of energy. You might get away with 150w of heat (eg http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Mod ... doy=Search) and a normal car battery will last 4-5hrs at that rate (56A.Hr=672w.hr). Having said that mains electricity is alot cheaper than petrol as a supply of energy.

I'm also toying with the idea of making my 940 Estate more efficient by adding solar panels, the electric load from the fuel pump and day running lights and other electronics does not come for free. You'd be lucky if you could charge a car battery in the winter when it is cold on a panel that would fit a 300, without actually building the cells on the roof. I've just bought an 80w panel and the max i've seen is 45w so far, but only tried it late afternoon in the garden.

For light get an LED replacement for the interior light and or some auxiliary lighting, LED is very efficient.

Actually just checked this 200w one on amazon, most buyers though it was useless.

I think the biggest cost might be the extra battery, you are looking at the guts of £100 these days, that will buy alot of petrol at tickover. A ca battery is not so suitable for deep cycling like that anyway. There are deep cycle batteries for about £80 for 110A.hr (1320w.hr).
