it was seazed yeah...ive freed it now... it has also come away from the spring at the top

I'm unfamiliar with the 1.4 engine but it sounds like you'll need some new valves. I'd wait until some experts have their say first though

all valves now seem ok .. however the retainer for one of the valve springs has failed..... anybody know where i can find replacement?

yeah you'll need a new one. also check that valve diameter and compare it with the data from the service books.

I once had a valve burn away so that there was a V shaped notch in it :o
