Standard diif to buy or swap

Post by Ron Bones » 30 Jan 2012 12:31 pm

Hey all, just bought a 1.7 340 and it's running a welded diff. I also have a spare gearbox with a second welded diff. I'd like to swap for a standard item as my girlfriend is learning to drive in the car and the weld will not help her!! Haha. I'm in Derby and could collect if your not too far away. Thanks.

hi there, the spare gearbox with a welded diff - is it a 5speed? and also, how much? i have a 4 speed with an open diff that i could do as part of the deal although its currently in my car so could be problematic. let me know anyhow as im sure i could arrange something, itching for a welder :)

Hey mate! Ideally I would have liked a 5 speed box as that's what's on my car and its very nice but if no one else comes forward I could live with a 4 speed. Like I say, I have a 5speed in the car welded which works an absolute treat and another box with a welded diff in the back which came with the car as a spare. I was told it was good, I've not looked at it and don't know if its 4 or 5 speed, I would guess 5. Not knowing these cars at all should I assume that we cannot just swap diffs and leave the boxes in situe? Or is the diff in the gearbox casing? Oh, and I'm in derby DE21. I am open to offers on the spare box also, I just thought a swap might work out nicely for me and another member!

Hi mate.
As far as i know you can just swap the diff although not 100% shure.
Stick a post in the tech section and just ask.
Someone will come up with the right info.
Cheers Mark.

Will do! Thanks for the advice. seems like an easier option than swapping the box entirely, especially since I wasn't actually aware that there were both four and five speed boxes available!

hi there, the diffs are a pain in the ass to swap from what ive read and also the 5 speed cars can only work with 5 speed diffs vice versa - to tell if a box is 5 or 4 speed (copying thomas's post on RR)

If they gearbox looks like this, its a 5 speed. If the one you have is missing the middle section between the diff and the gearbox, then its a 4 speed

That'l help! I'll have a look once I wrestle it out of the footwell in the morning. I started trying to empty the car today but ran out of space in the shed so I need a tidy up.

Yerp, Mines a 5 speed. So to clarify has anyone got a 5 speed box with a standard diff which they would like to swap for a 5 speed with a welded diff? :)
