insurance quotes

Post by pyro »

ive just been running some insurance quotes on my car (360 GLE) and i thought id go wild and try it with a 2.3 n/a in it for a laugh, but it turned out £20 more than a bog standard 360 2.0 which has got me thinkig (again)

ive been told by dad its time to go on my own name and pay myself lol i got 1500 ish as a 2.0 and a little bit more as a 2.3.......is this normal or have i done summat wrong?!

cheers - ben

There's not a huge power jump, depending on precisely which engine they're looking at, so it could be true. Which company have you got this quote from?

cheers

it was with adrian flux, and jus a bog standard 2.3 n/a (which gives a good increase in torque if i remember rightly and a pretty much bolt in job?)

Well exactly....at 145lbft over ~120, it's a worthwhile upgrade, but a B230F from a late 240/740, or early-ish 940 (the one you want....more on that later) makes 111bhp....marginally LESS than a late low-compression 360 GLT. That's good news, because insurers primarily look at BHP.

Now once you've got it installed, a cam swap (which it should fuel for ok, being an air-mass fuel system, rather than the crappy air-flow system in the 360) should make that figure jump into the 130s (with a freer flowing exhaust system).

Stock, a B230F is the worst of the 2.3s, but get one from a 940 (or ideally a late 240 2.3, if you can find one) and it should be in decent shape (relatively new....non-turbo, so not worked as hard), and it has the fuel system which is most responsive to modifications, and which will provide the best fuel efficiency. Pulling the LH2.4 system from a 240 seems to be the easiest donor, as it was 'tacked on', rather than being part of the main car loom as was the case for the 940.

If you can find a B230FB in a ~92 940, that's a 'hot tune' B230F with a cam and 531 head....making ~133bhp out of the can.

I'd avoid the earlier K-Jet fuel system cars - not too efficient, and it would need 'adding on' to a 360 anyway - so if you've gotta do that work, you may as well installed the 'better' system.

Alternatively, there's always MSnS, or get a carb version for the easiest swap!

cheers

id go for the carb version, purley cos it would be easier and maybe wen i have more time to fart about with looms and stuff put an injection lump in, would there be much change in MPG between a 2.0 and a 2.3 (b230k?)

Depends on how hard you drive it ;) I'd not expect a huge jump downwards, to be honest.

as im slowley warming my dad up to an engine swap, how much would i be looking at to get the engine and anything else i might need (ive got all the tools etc) and would a 1 day seem a reasonable time scale to get it done? as ive already got alot of the drive taken up with the other project! (series 2a lightweight landrover)

i was also thinking that it would be a good idea to rebuild the 'new' engine before its put in so i know what its gone through and i can entirely trust it!

cheers - ben

oh aye are the brakes up to the extra power?

I would think so as long as they're in good condition, a few times i've caught myself out not realising how fast im heading into a bend as you just don't expect the car to be accelerating that fast lol, but the brakes have been enough to stop me so far, that hasn't be the brakes, its been my misjudgement and i've had everything go light a few times

I'm paying a grand on my car fully declared. I'm 19 with 2 years no claims and the car is stated to be 150BHP by my insurers.

I'd imagine that fresh brakes will be fine, just make sure you renew things ;) 5 year old fluid won't be your friend. That is only an imagine though.

If you have a complete engine ready to go, a day is possible. If you need to swap the 360 specific parts over, you'll probably need longer.

I'm looking for £75 for my B230K. ~95k, non-heron (good), ran well. It could do with having the exhaust studs re-done, but I'd just stick a 531 head on when you find one!

cheers
