Overheating 340 1.4

Post by morgan105 » 27 May 2007 11:56 am

Hi all,

I am having problems with my wife's 340 overheating and just wondered if anyone has had a similar problem to this one and could shed some light on what it might be.
It is a 1989 340 1.4 CVT with Renix ignition. I have changed both senders (gauge and fan works as they should), replaced the water pump, changed the radiator for a known good one, checked all the emissions, flushed the system, checked head gasket which was fine, checked the timing advance was working, and even removed the thermostat (even though it tested fine), and checked the expansion cap was fine, but it still overheats. There are no tell tale signs of water/oil or oil/water mixing.
I am at a bit of a loose end as to what to check for now so if anyone has had a similar problem with overheating and managed to figure out what it was could they please let me know what to check as I don't want to get rid of the car. I am hopeing it is not a cracked block but normally this is evident when oil mixes with water but there are just no signs.

Any help on this mystery is much appreciated.

hmm, looks like you've checked almost everything there......Erm how do you know its overheating? Does the fan come on at all?

Is it actually boiling over or is the gauge just reading high?

could just be that the gauge has become faulty after all these years.

Problem is now solved, everything did work as it should and fan was always coming on just to answer the questions put to me.

All it turned out to be was that the missus hadn't topped up the oil as she said she had done  . Oh well, it wasn't a total loss because I managed to de-coke the pistons and cylinder head, re-grind the valves and put in new seals while I had it off and reset the tappets so all wasn't lost only time and some missing skin on the knuckles.

Anyway, back to normal feel easy driving!

And so you know the missus won't get away with that one lightly, I can see her having to wear sunglasses for a few days until the swelling goes down   (only joking!)

Thanks for the help and lets keep them going! (only i'm keeping the missus in the kitchen next time  )

Just a quick update:

It turns out it was 2 things now, one being the low oil level and the second was the original radiator. I decided to put the original one back in it to see what happened and it started to overheat again so in went the known good one and back to normal.
Going to put a new one in later today when it arrives, changed it often enough now to do it with my eyes closed  .

Hi Shimon,

Yes it was the valve stem seals that were replaced.
