Just wonderd if anyone knew what the wire from an immobiliser to the back of a radio actually does. Is it just a earth wire or what? If it's not just a earth wire what does it actually do when connected through a radio.

Just wonderd if anyone knew what the wire from an immobiliser to the back of a radio actually does. Is it just a earth wire or what? If it's not just a earth wire what does it actually do when connected through a radio.

are we talking 340s or more modern cars.
For the latter: Coded radios require a code to be manually entered on a keypad to unlock the radio whenever the power supply is disconnected.
All Volvo radios (including the P2 cars) are like this. THe P1, new S80, newV70 have radio modules so there isnt a radio unit as such in the dashboard of the car. The module is on the right hand side of the boot of a V50 for example. The CD reader is in the dashboard. The radio/ audio module is VIN coded to the car so cant be removed and placed in another vehicle.
Some manufacturers replaced coded radios with ones that have an identity code internally stored. When ever the radio is switched on, the radio communicates with the immobiliser (and potentially other modules), The radio checks its code with the one stored in the immobiliser. If they match, the radio has seen that it is in the right vehicle and switches on.
In this way, the immobiliser and the radio are connected together.
