Door removal

Hi,
Im new around these parts. I recently purchased a 1985 volvo 360 GLs. My intention is to learn all the practical skills to go with the theory I already posses. That being said though i've hit a bit of a stumbling block.

My two front wings are both rusted and need changing. I also want to inspect the extent of the rust underneath them aswell but at the moment am unable to. This is as i can't get the bloody doors off! Dam it!

The haynes manual says to knock the pin out of the retaining arm

'using a suitable metal drift'

not much help! I've tried a variety of different sized objects but none worked.

So i'd very much appreciate some advice off other people who have done this.

Yeah, so do we (hate text speak I mean) there's quite a few posts on door hinge pin removal. Do a search on the forum for the info, but basically you need the correct special tool. Volvo's one is the best, but others will work, but when they're seized in they take quite a bit of persuasion.

Hi and welcome! In order to remove the wings, the doors wouldn't need to come off, unless you're intending to replace worn out hinge pins, I'd try my best to leave them on! If it's because you need to get to the bolts that seem to be hidden by the doors, it is possible! Remove the pin in the door check strap that prevents it being opened too far, between the two hinges on the door. Be very careful not to let the door open back onto the wing, as it will now touch the door skin and there is nothing to stop it opening too far. Now with the correct short socket and a long thin extension bar combination you can reach these bolts.

A tip is to put some low tack masking tape on the door where the socket and bar pass, so that you won't scratch or damage the paintwork. With some patience and thought it is possible, and saves a lot of hassle with removing the doors! Hope that helps!
