right...i have put a five speed gear box in...very simple about 3 hours in total...now the thing is it came out of a 1.7 complete with diff
the ratio on the diff is higher therefor i have lost some of the accelaration time that i had
has any body done any head work IE skiming and porting....cos this is what i am going to do
skim head....20-25 thou
port...although there does not seem to be a lot of room...but ill see
later B14-4E manifold with performance exhaust
k@N filter
any coments would be most welcome...and ill let you all know the outcome

The 5 speed cars are supposed to accelerate faster - the diff ratio may be higher, but the individual gears are also lower.
Were the prop shafts the same length? Important question for a number of people planning 4 > 5 speed swaps.
As for more performance...if you want it to go much faster, don't bother. Even a turbo conversion without major modification would still be slower than a 360 GLT. If you just want a subtle improvement to regain what you had before...investigate the aspiration end of things - intake, exhaust, head (incl cam). Air filters are a pretty subtle improvement. You want to be looking at a bigger carb(s), a full exhaust system, and a custom ground cam. It might be worth finding out if any different versions ever had bigger valves.
Also look into what Andries (I forget his sign-in) did using a Renault 5 Alpine engine. You're probably best off talking to Renault 5 people anyway, as they're more likely to go for engine modifications than 340 owners - as they'll have bought a higher spec one in the first place if they're looking for major improvements!

the propshaft may be a little longer...maybe an inch, but it still went on...i am looking to see if i can do any thing with the cylinder head and exhaust...

I think that's the Alpine unit....which is your best bet.

That's a great engine!
It has got 103hp@6750rpm and 119 Nm@5000rpm of torque.
I'v got one laying about here too. Planning on puting it in the white car in my signature.

I am afraid you will have to have it custom built...

I had a website where guys welded custom exhaust manifolds together like making a microwave meal. The site was about putting a saab turbo engine in a peugeot 205. That's why they had to custom build the manifolds. If i find it again i can show it here.
Those guys will get high scores on the chav test i guess :-S
