Bit more 340 rallycross action

Post by Speedy88 »

Interesting, this one looks like a mk2. Comes in at around 2:30 but watch the whole thing for some 240 action as well :D

Been thinking the same thing actually. I'm pretty sure the tracks still exist, especially that one by that motorway that I forget the exact location of...

I know for a fact that my local car club still runs 4 car dirt races in a field now and again but I'm not 100% sure if that's technically rally-cross.

It's probably, like many motor sports, dying because nobody is into proper racing any more.

Rally cross is strong and well in Nordic countries. I don't know what the situation is in other Europe.

In Finland we've got three classes which are driven every year under the Finnish championship of SRC rallycross.

Classes are Division 1. , SRC (super rally cross) and autocross. Division 1. is a class for high powered 4-wheel drive cars (basically division 1. cars are beefed up WRC class cars with ~600hp 8)) SRC is a class for year model 1998 and newer RWD cars where modifications can be quite extensive as there are no engine limitations (for example S40 converted to RWD and equipped with a 2.8 - 3.2l EVO redblocks, usally around ~380hp NA, has been quite a common recipe in the SRC class) and the third class, the autocross, where the cars are usually a bit older and competition isn't nearly as costly as in higher classes as the engine size is limited to 2050cc. Cars can be either FWD or RWD in autocross and you can convert FWD to RWD like in the SRC class.

The classes are quite similiar in Sweden for example and there are races where there are cars entering from other Nordic countries also. European Rally cross championship races are the most well known http://www.ercfinland.fi/index.php?pinc=1&lng=en

These rallycross events are one of my favorite motorsport events to be watched on site because you'll see lot of action, different cars and the general atmosphere is great.

Some pics from recent events: http://www.superrallicross.fi/kuvagalleria/ :P (You can click 2007, 2008 and 2009 for the past events also)

Hmm, I think I have seen video from UK where they drove Rs200 and Metro's ex b-group cars into million small pieces.

However I don't know when that was, I was too shocked from level of destruction, they really did not care about hits or such.

Quality video, i like the seemingly unintentional dry humour of the commentator :D

Interesting handling characteristics displayed there by the 240's. I've said it before, but why did Volvo not see it fit to sell the 2dr 240 saloon in the UK  Even so i still have a hankering for a 240Glt saloon at the moment.

It still is done in Blighty, for example Lyyden Hill holds Rallycross i'm pretty sure Brands Hatch still has it's RC part of gravel track. As has been mentioned, unless it rakes in money like the F1 Circus it'll never be very popular to the "general public" rather than the motorhead public like us lot.

2010 Lyyden Hill, 2x Volvo's at 2.50, and whats with the randon daytime firework display at 5.40

Mine was uber cool, super comfortable, very roomy, huuuuuge boot but it will nuke your wallet to run it. Plus you'll never be able to park it anywhere.

Yeah they are awesome cars, two mates have a Glt and Torslander but both are estates. I'd tend to agree with you on the fuel, but the amount of mileage i cover probably won't be too bad. When i had my e28 528 thats probably the same size and i found that a hell of a lot easier to park than the 300 for some reason

Indeed. The 740 I had was light as chaffinch to park. Big as a ship but squeezed in everywhere.

Rallycross is still massive, there's some every weekend. It's on motors tv if you have that, or pop along to your local track, it's the most exciting motorsport to watch in person.
