Rust, glorious rust... body(kit) shock

Post by SteveP »

Well I knew my sills were pretty rusty - so with its MOT pending I thought I better get it sorted!

First of all I had a right game getting the sideskirt off the car because someone in the past (not original) had bonded it on as well as the original fixings. We'll come to that later...

Anyway, here's the nasties: WARNING: This is not pretty!

So in discussion with me and my welder, the bonding on the sideskirt lip onto the edge of the sill on the car has meant that the water has had no route to escape and remained trapped underneath.

Which kinda of explains why the passenger sill is nowhere near this bad - because it's not bonded in place! So it's getting new sill and rear wheel arch panels welded in and then off to a bodyshop to be sprayed up.... rather sooner than I expected but hey.

Let this be a warning for those of you fitting kits in the near future!

Well to be honest It'd make more economical sense to buy another - but then I find whenever I've changed cars it's just ended up being false economy anyway.

Get rid of one problem - find another in the next car etc.

Plus I just like this saloon too damn much - thankfully the rest of the shell is very sound. Besides, I wouldn't know what car to buy next that I actually like as much a 300, despite a continuing battle of rust

Afraid not, I can't weld! I'll have a before and after welding though - and an after once it gets sprayed!

I'm certainly not buying another 300 - for one I'd have to buy a saloon (for my leather and kit) and thats no easy task finding one!

Consider this car as an ongoing project...

Wouldn't that have been the half day job of a new diff 3 months ago :P

Yeah, alright, so I'm just as bad with scrapping Beast, when in theorey I could have learnt to weld on it. That saloon is nice, and does warrent the work.

Well, at least that explains the rust! Drainage and rust prevention is the key with a 300. Good work on repairing it and not scrapping, as it is one nice looking car, and it's proper pimp with the leather and kit!
