VOC ARGH!!! Patronising old ****

Post by Stuntman »

Right I am officially sick of the VOC board, I asked for alittle information and all I get is people looking down there blo*dy noses.

I rescued a 240GLT that was going to the scrappy, due to some terminal rust, then i was told I should restore it and should reconsider stripping it!!

Here's the posts!
hi to be honest i would have converted the free glt to a manual and restored it , not many of the early ones left instead of striping it,but thats your desition ,i actually took pics of it in the car park at the bkv because it was so nice glad i did .good luck gary
It's none of my bussiness, But I must say I agree with Gary. I saw that car at the B.K.V and it really stood out to meTotally did'nt realise that it was up for grabs. Did'nt look in that bad a shape. The old Glt's are suposed to be the best ones. You should think this through carefully as you may regret it. Good luck with your convertion anyway though.

My reply

I knew I may get some flak for this so here goes.

The car has been re-registered so has a non original plate, both sills are completely rotten, the rear axel is not straight, there is extensive corrosion in the bulkhead, th rear window is cracked, both front floors are rotten, there is excessive play in the steering rack, all four discs are badly warped, both rear cailipers need refurbing, the prop doughnut is almost non existant, etc etc

Gentleman I thank everyone for help offered, but I must say remarks like this do not help the cause of getting younger people into restoring cars. I have the full nut and bolt restorations of a GT6 triumph mk2, a herald Vittese Mk2 and an 850 mini. I strip cars that are scrap, the GLT I picked up from MadMax (Maddie) was near the scrap yard, surely this is better than the whole car being crushed? Maybe it's me and I should spend thousands on a car that really in the next 10 years would not pay back what I inested in her. My Volvo projects are not for sale and will not be put for sale either.

Maybe I and the other members who are interested in period modificatoins should look elsewhere for help in the future? I am an enthusiastic member of the V3M but I have resisted the temptation to join turbobricks as I thought the VOC would be open to people modifying the older metal.

I'm sorry for the rant and I really do not mean to offend anyone but I have been offended by some of the remarks I have recieved in the past about ruining a perfectly god example of a car.

Can I just remind people I started with an MOT failure 240 GL auto estate with a cracked wind screen and non functioning electric wndows, I now have some very rare optional extras and a car I have alot of pride and joy in.

good on you Andy ,

Mind you I did try to warn you what the VOC can be like ,
perhaps you had caught them on a really bad day and their colostomy bags had overflowed into their green wellies.
they certainly seem to get a bit anal about things !!!!
everything has a shelf life and when its past let it go but first scavenge as much off of it as you can.

Well I don't know - maybe the comments were made without knowing the full facts of how rough it was? Rightly so the old GLT's are rare, and I could understand people being annoyed if a good one was being broken up for spares. However, a car likely to be scrapped/rotten beyond serious repair is surely better to use for spares/modifications to a standard 240.

Simple possible reason is, perhaps they dont quite realise how bad it is? IMO it does look quite nice in the pics.

Hahaha, the voice of reason, I agree but both of them saw it at the BKV, when you get up close to it the interior isnt bad but the rest is awful really, the rear arches are full of filler etc.

I just has to have my say, this is why places like the V3M and turbobricks are so popular because we do not fit into the VOC way of doing things, ah well rant over I feel better now ;)

Well, this is a tough one. I think Steve is bang on really. Often a car can look ok, even in reality, until you start looking closely, and maybe get it up on some ramps and have a proper poke about, and even start using it. Then faults and problems become apparent.

I think it is a case of lack of info and some misunderstandings, one of their replies seemed to just ask to you to think about it, but still supported you in your conversion. Sometimes even the hardcore of Volvo owners might not know how rare or important something is and that it is worth preserving, and I think they were just pointing out that if it was viable, to try and save it. Clearly it isn't, so make the most of it, help it live on in Tulip!

I only joined up the the VOC at the BKV, I'd heard lots of bad things about the VOC and had previously not even bothered thinking about joining. I was going to go the the BKV and park in the car park, until I decided the night before after cleaning the car a bit to enter it and join up, just for the fun of it.

I was made to feel very welcome by the majority, despite being a very young Volvo enthusiast, certainly not the stereotypical Volvo driver. I spoke to one of the Directors, who turned out to be a very nice chap, who had previously owned a 360 GLT and was all for the younger members joining in, he didn't want to sound patronising, but he said he was glad to see a lot of younger members there. There was however one or two of the VOC members who didn't speak to me, despite being spoken to on a couple of occassions, which made me realise some of the criticism was true and deserved. I'd made the effort, but they ignored me, that annoyed me, we're a minority to start with, we should all club together to enjoy our cars, even if we choose to enjoy them in different ways, whether it be the concours cars, the highly modified or just everyday workhorses.

I think as with many things, we have an image of them, which may or may not the right, and the same can be said for them, they might think we're all going to be ill mannered chavs or something and have formed an opinion and stereotypical image of the Volvo youth. Change happens slowly and if the VOC is going to move forward, we need to help the process and try and let the few members afraid of change and the younger members see us as we really are and to hopefully change their views. We need to get along to a few more VOC meets and hopefully then things can move forward.

One day some of us could be involved with running the VOC for all we know, as someone will have to take over, we have the enthusiasm and it'd be a shame for us to ingore the VOC purely because of a few conflicts and problems. Many of us are preserving 300's and other Volvo's in our own way, if not only by using them and servicing them, as people such as Adam, who has a car that will last an age, as he's done extensive work, some parts are better than when it was new, he's modified other parts so they work better and really made it a car to be proud of. Andy has saved a rare GLEi SE and made it one of the fastest 360's around by installing megasquirt and rebuilding his engine. Foggy has taken the carb route in the 360 to a new level, making an awesome sounding and mighty quick car! Those are just a few examples, and we need to show that this is what we're doing, not just looking for a cheap car to thrash around in till it dies, many of us have a real interest.

Sadly there will always be one or two people in everything you do that will spoil it or cause problems for everyone else. As I see if, there are enough of the VOC willing to embrace the younger members, we need to ignore, or address the other problems by showing how we really are.

I've actually been a member of the VOC forum for quite some time, but I didn't post on there at all hardly, but I've started taking a look a bit more often since the BKV. Yes there are some muppets, as you get in most places and it is a different atmosphere to V3M, which I really do enjoy, but there are still some very knowledgable people and a lot of useful info to be found on there.

Sorry for a hoooooge post, but there were a few things I felt needed to be said of we're to move forward and I'd like to become more involved with the VOC after hearing from a Director that they really do want to have more younger members involved.

Bloody hell Pete... essay style ;) (I have just come back from the pub (again))

I must say overall I've been pleased with the VOC, it's saved me a massive amount on insurance, i managed to get hold of a brand new PAS rack through technical driver, and I think the BKV is a very good event to get along to.

I think the problem is with the VOC is theres rather a distinguished group of people - people who are enthusiastic and keep their cars pristine, then us - people who are interested in improving their cars, whilst being enthusiastic in the marque and model - and often there are conflicting interests. I think thats just the way it is - doesn't bother me too much. I think the BKV needs to be modernised, all very well with such an event but some people have more pressing issues than cleaning every component of their car. However, the greatest respect for people who do - because there were some stunning cars last weekend.

Hell, if i wanted a cheap car to thrash around in.. it wouldn't be a 300... they're certainly not particularly cheap to run in all honesty, but very rewarding all the same!

Very true, if kept going properly not cheap at all, but if you spend the money its a real reward to have the thing purring along :D

I think its a generation issue. The older generation regard us as chav racers and we regard them as beardy old farts, when, as Mac and V3m has proved, really that's not true in a lot of cases.

The guy that Pete was talking about was Chris Wickers, who has been the 400 series register keeper for years (I've always read his keeper reports in the Driver magazine for a long while now) and he is going to be taking over from Dave Ovenden as the editor of said 'Driver' magazine this year. He approached us asking for articles and although I'm not a writer....always did terribly when it came to essays at school, I'm seriously considering an article about 'the younger generation' siting V3m as an example. I know quite a lot of guys who post on here are also VOC members so if you wanna help write it then that would be a great help. Might help dispel a few myths ;)

Mornin all,

Pete and I have actually been PMing on this very subject, so now its in open forum I'll have a stir.

Hope you don't mide Pete, I'll reproduce the text of a couple of my PMs.

"The poor old VOC is taking a bit of flack on the board at present.!!

The VOC director you spoke with at the BKV was Chris Wickers (he is also the V40 and 400 series register keeper).

Had a drink with him last night and he, at least, is keen on 'the younger' crowd with 300s getting involved. He and the board is well aware of the image the VOC has - but change happens slowly - there are a lot of 'old school' members who don't fit well with anyone under 90! Some of the board also are a little concerned that some might regard younger members as boy racers which might reflect on the VOC.

Sad as it is, it's only experience by association that would change their opinions. It would be a good idea for V3M members to go to their local VOC meetings now and then to show they can read and write !!!
We were speaking with an older couple from Dartford (1971 145 in showroom condition) who were quite happy to join in with 'younger set.

I guess a club like the VOC has to cater for all, but is bound to be a little staid at times. Still there is hope."

and,

"Mornin' Pete,

Can't agree more with you. I am, as you might put it, an 'older' person but my attitude is, and always has been - keep an open mind - accept anyone and anything as they are until I have good cause not to.

But in all walks of life many folk choose to get staid and reserved because that's what makes them comfortable! If they don't want to know you - that's their problem - BUT is is their choice. I have had 'comments' about me (long hair, ponytail, beard, tatoos etc.) and I havn't lost any sleep yet!. It doesn't make me any less of a Volvo anorak.

Might be worth you trying your local VOC group - In mine (Essex & Suffolk) the actual average age is about 50, but at most meetings outsiders would think it was more like 12!.

I can understand Stuntman being upset - it's his car to do with as he will!!
I hear the same argument from the 'classic car' crowd about people who choose to race 'bangers' (crime to destroy classic car etc.) but often they just like the sound of their own voice (and wouldn't tackle a restoration themselves in a million years).

Stuntman has every right to voice his opinions but also must accord the same right to those with a differing view. The rest of us should treat both sides with equanimity.

Funny world if we only had the weather to moan about!!

Philosophy lecture over - all the best mate - Mac."

Anyway - my views known - I guess we all need to chill a bit.

Getting off his high horse - Mac.

Poor Mac must be very confused as to which group he really fits in to lol,

I dont wish to make him big headed but I think Mac is one of the coolest , most pleasent ,chilled out guys I have come across in a long time and a great asset to the V3M,

He could almost be WJP 01908's dad he's that chilled
( its all right Mac, Will is another member here who I have the utmost respect for and just happens to have a pony tail and beard )

I think Mac should stand for the VOC commitee he would certainly get the backing of the younger members( I might even join myself ) and could drag the rest of them (kicking and screaming no doubt ) into the present time .

My experiences with the VOC ( Bromley pageant of motoring , Classic car show at Knebworth and Hampshire pageant of motoring ) have always been negative , the members I have met have always been very ellitest and not spoken to me more than they have had to.

Now I know I look and act much younger than my years
( the V3m has kept me well preserved if not the redline)
but I dont think I could be taken as a boy racer chav type
( No , I didnt have the redline with me lol)
so maybe its not just youngsters they dont like

anyway Mac you are a breath of fresh air to the forum with your vast knowledge and great wit ( I said wit )and long may you feel welcome , even if you are a

I think you're right - but what I don't understand is that here we all tend to have the same attitude and friendlyness, despite generation gaps between members. This tends to not really be the case over at the VOC (and I assume many other car clubs). However, I'm not knocking the VOC club, I've been happy with my membership so far - and am all for helping towards it being more appealing to everyone.

I think there are certain things that need modernising, I mean for example is the BKV even an appropriate event anymore? That may be a little contravertial but many people have more important concerns with their cars than keeping them pristine, particularly if they're used everyday. I mean there were a hell of a lot of nice cars in the car park - why did the owners not show them off too?

Actually when Pettaw talks of 'beardy old farts' he's quite accurate in some cases !

I can't exactly hide the beard - and well, this, on the back of my motor, it just proves the rest.
