i thought you had a 360.. thats a petrol engine surely?

basically kickdown is just a function of an auto-box. if you had an auto diesel, then yes it would work

Yes, the best thing you could do with a diesel is kick it down something,
Like a mine shaft..........

I think that just about sums up the advice  Certainly the 300 series diesel is supposed to be pretty bad...

I have read its painfully slow! Wonder why they didn't use the Renault 1.9 TD engine (as fitted to the 19). 93bhp and 127lb/ft of torque would've been much nicer!

I have had a change to drive 300-series diesel once, it was horrible, you have to floor it and hope that you can keep up with truck accelerating front of you because if you leave too much space between the truck will vanish into distance and you are moving chicane.

Nissan Sunny diesel was something similar.

But for me 12 seconds from 0-100kph is slow, 7 seconds or less is what I like :)

All diesel engines without turbo are great pain to drive, imo.

Does a 300 diesel do 0-100kmh (0-60mph) in 12 seconds? I guess it is even worse, about 16 secs.... That is very slow indeed!!! Almost to call dangerous in modern traffic....

Can diesel do 100kph!? I could not even match trucks speed and it is around 89kph :D

Maybe that car had something wrong with it, but it was barely moving 80kph when floored all out, close behind truck it could keep up barely.

My car does 0-100kph around 12 secs in current condition, it is soo slow, but maybe soon faster ;)

its 16-17mph

i dont think the 19 td would have been out at the same time - the diesel came out in '84 iirc.

also, the 19 td would have been less economical - probably not much better than the 1.4 - the whole point in the car was (probably) to make it as economical as poss..

hmm thats true, I'm forgetting the age of 300s :) Duno how economical it'd be if you have to floor it everywhere!

still fairly economical - a non-turbo diesel still cant use much fuel, even when its at full whack

incidentally, the 760 td (a v6, 2.4l massive thing, with a TURBO), was the quickest diesel ever when it came out - 0-60 in a non-astounding 11.8 seconds!

hmmm really? When did the 740 turbo diesel come out? I'd quite fancy one for the economy but don't know if it'd be too slow... should be good mid range though if theyre torquey enough! Ryans TD Estate at the November meet sounded pretty good when revved :)

83? sommit like that

they're not *brilliant* for economy - probably work out the same as a non-injection 300

The D24 in the 700 was a straight six :) It's a good match for a 360 B200K all-round - performance, mpg, etc.

The Renault 1.9 TD is the one in the 400 series :) The D16 is basically the same engine, but obviously with lower displacement and no turbo.

Diesel is the way forward for an everyday car - but not for performance :)

cheers
