My Car Keeps Cutting Out?

I noticed this morning that the fairly large black pipe that enters the centre of the pre-heat flange on my carburettor was perished.

I pulled the perished pipe off and took it into my local motor factors to get a size match, the new one was much longer and I didn't have a stanley knife on me to cut it to size and replace it there and then.

I basically drove home with no pipe at all, about a five minute drive, my car will run but now keeps cutting out at traffic lights etc!

I hope I haven't done irreparable damge, maybe I've trapped air in the fuel system by doing this?

Any ideas?

do you still have the old hose?

there's a blocking plug in the hose, creating a hole of 1mm in diameter, if the hole is way bigger than that, it makes the mixture settings wrong causing these symptons.

Thankfully I still have the old hose, does it matter where I position the blocking plug within the new hose?

Christ thats much better, thank god for this brilliant forum, I positioned the blocking plug with the bigger hole facing the pipe that comes out of the pre-heat flange with the very small hole facing away from it, Im assuming this is correct?
