Horn wiring

Post by Om7 »

Took the steering wheel off today to find out why the horn does not work and I was presented with two broken wires inside leading to the left and right horn buttons.

Where do these two wires go? The only wire I can find that does not have anything connected to it underneath the dash is a pink wire with a female spade connector on the end. Should the two wires inside the wheel be spliced together inside to lead to one connecter?

Thanks! :D

The wires just go from the two connector plates that rub on the boss terminals to the two horn buttons. They shouldn't be broken, try putting them together and see if it works then. Also check the boss terminals haven't worn down too much.

Okay. I now have the wheel in front of me and I cannot seem to find the boss terminals. I tried twisting the two wires together, but it didn't work out. :lol:

I'll try and get some photos. :D

Here we have some pretty exciting photos;

Ahh. You have just solved two problems! :P

Now I have seen pics it's all flooding back to me. A strange thing to be missing, unless it was robbed to be used on an aftermarket wheel and not replaced when I bought it. A shame as my MOT is on Wednesday. :lol:

Just run the two wires (not the ones in the steering wheel, the ones that end at the two spring-loaded prongs which would contact the missing horn ring.) to a button on the dash, you obv. don't need indicator self-cancellation for the MOT. :D

I have bought a horn ring from volvosneverdie. Hoping it will be here tomorrow for the MOT! If not I'll do it the ghetto way. It will probably fail on the chopped springs anyway. :(!

Horn ring arrived the morning of the MOT! Sorry I havent replied sooner, the past few days have been a ballache. (Three cars taken for MOT in two days, two failed and the Beemer wouldn't even start! Had to cancel until I have figured a wiring problem. :cry:)

Nearly two pages of faults, but better than I expected. Don't have the list on me as it's in the car which is now at the unit but off the top of my head;

No horn - See pic below
Rear nearside light is dodgy - Earth problem I think, bang it and it comes back on again
Top rubbers perished on front suspension with chopped springs - Having new suspension all round with the F7R swap
Rear suspension has lowering blocks (which I did not realise was a fail. :oops:) - As above
Exhaust is missing hangers and other simple exhaust problems. - Made a side exit out of the original exhaust for a laugh (dodgiest thing I have ever seen. :lol:), making a new (serious) one to suit the F7R
Welding needed. Holes on the inside bottom of the front arches which goes under into the sills on both sides. - I Half expected the shell to be rotten, so I am happy with just two average size holes!

So, back to the horn, new pic;

I am missing the point in which the horn ring should rub against to make the connection. I cannot figure out what or where it should fit though. :? Anyone?
